Introduction
We want to share an important update regarding the recent oak tree removals within the Sherwood neighborhood, specifically along Ivanhoe Drive, Flintshire Way, and Fosse Way.
Following outreach from residents and direct communication with county leadership, the tree removal project has been temporarily placed on hold. This pause will allow for further review and discussion before any additional action is taken.
What Prompted the Pause
After becoming aware of the scope and pace of the tree removals, the Sherwood Area Community Alliance formally contacted county leadership to express strong concern on behalf of residents. While acknowledging the county’s responsibility to maintain safe and accessible infrastructure, we raised concerns about the lack of prior notice, the impact on the neighborhood, and the need to explore alternative solutions before proceeding further.
We respectfully but firmly requested a temporary pause to allow for meaningful dialogue and consideration of options that could balance safety, infrastructure needs, and preservation of the neighborhood’s character.
County Response
In response, the County’s Director of Public Works confirmed that the project has been placed on hold. While the county has identified the trees as presenting safety concerns related to sidewalk damage, they also acknowledged the concerns raised by residents and indicated that further review is underway.
The county has advised that they will be in touch in the coming weeks after completing this additional evaluation.
What This Means Right Now
At this time:
Tree removal activity in the affected areas is paused
No additional trees should be removed while the project is on hold
Further action will not occur until the county completes its review
If contractors arrive in the neighborhood during this pause, residents are encouraged to politely inform them that the project has been placed on hold by the Director of Public Works pending further review.
Next Steps
During this pause, the Sherwood Area Community Alliance will continue to seek clarification and dialogue with county representatives who have decision-making authority. The goal of these conversations is to better understand:
The full scope and intent of the original project
The county’s safety and maintenance concerns
The priorities and concerns of affected residents
Whether alternatives to tree removal may be feasible
Opportunities for mitigation, collaboration, or replacement where removal cannot be avoided
Our intent remains collaborative. This is not about opposing safety or necessary infrastructure improvements, but about ensuring that solutions are thoughtfully considered and communicated.
Thank You to the Community
We appreciate the many residents who reached out respectfully, shared concerns, and allowed time for this process to work. Calm, constructive engagement played an important role in reaching this pause and creating space for further discussion.
Additional updates will be shared as soon as more information becomes available.
